Hello Queens and Kings, my name is Yambakam Nyangani and I am here today to congratulate you on reaching the end of the You-ni Blog Series!
Today's post will be offering you an amalgamation of advice that are sure to aid you.
1. Learn How to Learn.
Interesting, right? Let me expound; growing up I wasn't really taught how to learn on my own. I was taught at school by great teachers, I did my homework, went to extra lessons( the norm in my community), read over notes, did exams and either got a good grade. After a test or exam, if you were to ask me about the topic I would have given you an unsubstantial answer. This was not for all subjects, but it was for most of them.
Find new ways of studying in you-ni. We each have our particular means of learning information best, they all however include active listening and active learning. When listening to a lecture form images in your mind to better help you understand what is being said. Relate information read or listened, to personal experiences or anecdotes. Go over notes often so you can fully understand. Ali Abdaal says to know if you have understood a concept ask yourself if you can explain it to a 5-year-old. If the answer is yes you then keep it away and go over it periodically until it's time to celebrate that knowledge. Time uses up what you feed it. Use quizzes, flashcards and mini-projects to seal the lessons in your brain.
2. Start Preparing early, like right now.
Get your stationery purchases done, decide on a routine that fits your current space, you might have to wake earlier in order to avoid distractions from home. You might need to set a sleep and wake schedule, start developing the habit now, in the few weeks before classes start.
3. Plan for the school year
Do you know what G.P.A you want to end with at the end of the school year?
Have you developed a study plan for the different subjects? Have you set personal goals for the school year, like the number of extra-curricular activities you want to be involved in? meals? If no, you should get started on the planning. Write them down and if you are up to it create a visual representation of them, like a vision board( either digital or physical).
4. Take your studies importantly
I mean.. you are paying for it. Someone says you should take it as important as you take a job. Do adequate preparation for it and perform excellently when the time comes. Set daily times for it and meet the deadlines
6. After failing a test:
Review the entire test, Identify the wrong answers, why they are wrong and then Reflect on why you did badly; was it the study method? was it the thought process? was it that you did not prepare adequately? Upon reflecting fix your study plan or preparation method accordingly.
7. Wait until a week:
after attending classes before making textbook purchases to decide if you need them. Make purchases via Facebook groups, just type "*UNIVERSITY NAME*... textbook group"
8. Remember that every percent adds up, so don't leave an assignment or quiz undone because you will end up feeling the effects at the end of the semester.
9. I already spoke about this, but really, advise you all to take 'How to Learn Online' offered for free by edX. I finished the course and have in-depth knowledge and I must say that the course is extremely beneficial to all students in general. I feel much more prepared for school, it was simple and enjoyable.
This is going to be new territory, as you step into it go with optimism. Optimism for the lessons and life experiences you will learn, for the strong character you will build and the knowledge of yourself you will discover. It might be hard but you will find some good and enjoyable moments, it is also your job to create those enjoyable moments whether it be my nature walks, soothing morning routine or catch up with friends via video calls or in real life- the onus is on you.
